Founder/Executive Director’s Message
The Genesis of A.G.E
As I reflect upon my journey through life, a story emerges centered around my profound passion for improving the lives of elderly. It began as a frontline registered nurse. I witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by our aging population and a fire ignited within me to make a tangible difference in their lives. This transformative experience drove me to establish A.G.E dedicated to addressing the pressing needs of older adults, with a fervent commitment to enhancing their quality of life and fostering a sense of dignity and fulfillment through community and family engagement. As aptly stated by Nelson Mandela, "A society that does not value its older people denies its roots and endangers its future." This quote serves as a guiding beacon, emphasizing the critical need to enhance the capacity of older individuals to support themselves and, when that becomes untenable, to provide care for them. Amidst the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic, I served as a dedicated registered nurse in Ghana, working tirelessly on the frontlines of the emergency and outpatient department, specifically focused on caring for older adults. The gravity of the situation was overwhelming, as the virus posed a significant threat to vulnerable elderly individuals and those who cared for them. Each day, I witnessed the unwavering efforts of my healthcare colleagues as we navigated through uncertainties. Adhering to strict safety protocols, I donned personal protective equipment to ensure the safety of my patients and myself. Despite the physical and emotional toll, I remained steadfast in my mission to provide compassionate care—listening to their stories, offering comfort, and supporting their families in moments of fear and isolation. Their strength and resilience inspired me, fueling my commitment to fight for their recovery and well-being. During the pandemic, Ghana's elderly population faced obstacles that hindered their well-being, necessitating a comprehensive approach to long-term care. Access to healthcare became a major concern, and the government made efforts to ensure continued medical support. The pandemic also took a toll on their mental health, intensifying feelings of loneliness and isolation. Limited access to community resources further compounded the challenges they faced. However, I took steps to provide essential supplies and ensure their safety, aiming to promote long-term care and improve their quality of life. These experiences highlighted the critical importance of addressing not only acute medical challenges but also the broader spectrum of physical, mental, and social well-being for older adults in Ghana, extending beyond the context of the pandemic. Motivated by these experiences, I have dedicated myself to addressing the comprehensive well-being of older adults in Ghana. I am determined to be a voice for the elderly in Ghana and the A.G.E would be a good step in bridging the gap in elderly care in Ghana.
