Who We Are

Our Golden Year

Picture your “golden years”. What comes to mind? It’s most likely an image of yourself; old and grey, retired, and sitting in a rocking chair, reflecting on your life’s journey. Undoubtedly, ageing is an inevitable part of our human experience, and each of us, as we navigate the labyrinth of life, is faced with the various physical and mental changes that come with the natural process of ageing. As people age, they are unable to do many things that they could do effortlessly in their youth, and hence, become more dependent on other people for assistance in various forms. After serving their nation, and nurturing upcoming generations, the aged should ideally be ushered into a life of rest, great care and love. Their golden years should be lived and celebrated as such; golden. However, this is not the case in reality, in our societies.

We are here to serve! AGE is here to serve the elderly in our communities!
Care For Every Situation

The Reality Of Ageing In Ghana

Ghana, like many other nations, is experiencing a significant demographic shift. The proportion of elderly (60+ years) in Ghana has been steadily increasing. The Ghana Statistical Service reveals that from 4.5% in 1960, the elderly population rose to 6.7% in 2010 and is projected to reach 9.8% by 2050(1). The World Bank also reports that Ghana's population aged 65 and older is anticipated to double between 2020 and 2050(2). Undoubtedly, the elderly constitute a significant portion of Ghana's population, yet questions loom about the quality of care and support they receive. How well are seniors cared for in Ghana? Are the health systems and policies tailored to prioritize senior citizens and help them live comfortable lives? What do the statistics reveal? Unfortunately, the truth is stark. According to the Ghana Statistical Service, a staggering 80% of Ghanaians aged 60 and above live in poverty. The majority of elderly individuals reside in rural areas, presenting unique challenges for elderly care(3). These older Ghanaians face a higher risk of both communicable and non-communicable diseases, with inadequate access to healthcare. They also grapple with social isolation, loneliness, and even mistreatment, often from their own families and caregivers. Some are left with insufficient housing and no pension coverage. From issues relating to healthcare and financial stability to social isolation and neglect to ageism, these individuals are faced with a significant multitude of challenges, and as modernization sweeps through society, and traditional family structures evolve, some seniors are left with little to no support systems to rely on. This reality falls far short of what we envision for our golden years. It's time for public health in Ghana to shine a light on the elderly and advocate for reforms in elderly care.
